One of the first questions we are asked is Tidioute (pronounced tiddy-oot) is an Iroquois (Seneca) Indian word meaning 'protrusion of land', relating to the feature that the Allegheny River makes a sharp bend at this site, creating a near-peninsula within the river valley. |

Tidioute was a booming oil center after the discovery of oil in nearby Titusville, in 1859. Tidioute was the site of the worlds first flowing oil well, and the birthplace of Standard Oil. Oil millionaires, railroads, and wealth followed. Tidioute's collection of Victorian-era mansions remains today as a reminder of its fabulous past.
Today, Tidioute is a quiet Allegheny river community of about 800-people year-round, and the population swells to several thousand in the summer and during hunting and fishing season.
